This is one of the most beautiful and well-done yoga/anatomy books I have ever seen. As learning anatomy can be daunting for some, this book has more illustrations that text. There are full explanations of muscle, tendon, ligament, facia, and skeletal functions as they pertain to yoga poses. I recommend this book to anyone practicing or teaching yoga. The spiral bound cover makes it very practical to use.

This book is exactly what its cover promises it to be: a guide to functional anatomy in yoga. And a good one too, I might add!
The first chapter gives an introduction to the basics of anatomy, which prepares you properly for the in-depth discussions of the chapters on the muscles. I do think that this chapter could benefit from some revision as it could make the relations between concepts clearer, but content-wise everything's there.
The funny thing is that what that first chapter lacks in terms o

Not my favorite. A lot of the illustrations lack clarity and many are not even labeled to let you know which muscles are engaged It seems as though you have to already come into this book with quite a bit of anatomical knowledge for it to be helpful. There's probably something better suited out there for newbs like me.

This is a handy anatomy reference for yoga teachers and practitioners. The bulk of the book describes major muscles, or—when relevant—muscle groups. For each of the key muscles it gives the insertion, origin, innervation, agonists, synergists, and depicts the muscle in color drawings. The book also shows typical yoga postures in which the muscle is engaged or stretched. This gives one some idea of how the muscle is affected by changes in attitude and state of contraction.
True to the title, this

This book was fascinating to me. I am new to anatomy so I was taken back by how complex our bodies really are.
Extremely helpful illustrations. My only complaint is that it could have been organized and indexed a bit better, and that it wasn't as complete as it could be. More, please.

Fantastic book. Great illustrations and concise descriptions of the muscles in the poses. Both volumes are great tools for yoga instructors.

This book is grand for learning the anatomy for yoga. It goes into great detail about how poses affect the skeleton and muscles. However, this is not what I was looking for and wanted something more basic, perhaps what I'm looking for is in the second book focused on poses.
This book is recommended for someone who wants to study yoga for college/university studies or aims to become a yoga instructor.
This is a wonderful book but there is such a frustration in read and rereading it, trying to differentiate between “engage” “isolate” “active” “synergize”
There really needed to be, not simply an anatomical index, but a better explanation of HOW to use the different parts of the anatomy successfully. Every time I reread it, I feel like Im understanding, but then another verb arises that doesn’t mean anything. And these arrows, sweet christ.

In some ways, this book was helpful, but it's organized oddly and some muscle groups are detailed while others had me wondering, 'where the hell is this muscle?' Overall, it was fine, and a nice supplement to Keil's Functional Anatomy of Yoga. On its own, it might have been more confusing than supportive.

Fantastic
After years of trying to understand why yoga is so beneficial, seeing how the muscles react with each pose makes it clear. It also helped me understand why certain poses are not possible for me, at least at the moment.
This book is a great introduction to anatomy as it relates to yoga. I did not love this particular book as much as I wanted to due to my previous exposure to the book 'Yoga Anatomy' which is a more advanced, in-depth look at the same topic. The illustrations in this book are pretty cool.

A good source to learn about anatomy. However, there are unclear pictures, and inaccurate answers for test questions.
At one point downward dog is even referred to as upward dog (the image of down dog).
I will continue to use this book, but I'm not sure it's the best source available.
Great reference book. It's simple and easy to understand. Beautiful illustrations.
I don't know why I waited so long to read this, but super beneficial for yoga teachers and practitioners
Точно тома което търсих. Изключително добър наръчник по анатомия на мускулите в контекст на йога практика.

Hatha is not my preferred kind, but the understanding of how the muscles work is common to all yoga varieties, and it is important information to assimilate for the practice.

This manual is designed to help students learn about the anatomy behind various yoga poses. To that end, the illustrations are gorgeous and the overall explanation of topics is done reasonably well. The only quibble I had was the author's tendency to use a term (like 'psoas') in an illustration and then not actually define what that term is until five pages later. All the illustrations and lucid explanations fail if the organization is not rock solid.
The book is also meant for a more advanced pr

The 2 star rating is strictly based on my opinion/perception of the book and has nothing to do with the quality or validity of the information it contains. I was looking for a book that details which muscles to use in different yoga poses, which this book sort of includes--but this book was definitely more about how muscles work in general with yoga as an incidental focus. The medical language was way more than I was interested in trying to learn, and overall I feel this resource would be better..more

Really impressed with this book. It's well organized and incredibly well illustrated. Basically explain how joints and muscles work and then to explain each muscle, it provides visuals of a skeleton doing a pose that stretches or activates the muscle, including open and closed chain movements, eccentric and concentric, etc. Really informative and very helpful in understanding what is going on, particularly with deep muscles that have been kind of hard for me to visualize as well before reading t..more

I've never taken an anatomy class before and was admittedly quite lost, but the pictures in the book, tailored specifically to yoga poses was incredibly useful, and the text not too overwhelming. Gives you a new perspective to all the poses of yoga and ideas about how to stretch or strengthen your muscles.

Excellent illustrations and clear explanations make this an invaluable work. Even if you have no background in anatomy this is presented well enough to help any teacher or even just a practicing yogi a great understanding of which muscles are used in which manner for various poses.
Pretty cool book. Anatomically realatively basic, but it offers some great visualizations. With that said I wish that they would have done more with the book as a whole. This book only highlights a couple of poses instead a larger variety of asanas.

Amazing drawings of the muscular action during asanas.
I took a workshop with these guys. Ray's an ex-football player/orthopedic surgeon who studied yoga with B. K. S. Iyengar. Chris has a background in video game design and his illustration for the book are all derived from 360 degree 3D simulated projection of the human body in various asanas. In the workshop, Ray talks about what various muscles are doing in each pose while Chris revolves his animated skeletons around on the screen, making groups of muscles appear and disappear with the click of..more

Illustrations best part. Explains why and what of yoga poses. Very healing art and science of body and mind. Thanks
Only useful part is the appendix
Like so many yoga books, this one will remain a constant reference text, with its companion book.

This is an excellent reference with some amazing diagrams of the human anatomy. A lot of the basic (and some not so basic) poses are covered. Each diagram also has a brief description of the major muscles that are involved in the pose. This really is a fantastic and eye-opening book, and there is only one reason that it doesn't get five stars. It is because most of descriptions contain only the names of the muscles, and the muscles in the diagrams are not labelled. The muscles do get labelled in..more

I think this is a great book in terms of what muscles are used in each asana, and it is useful both to students and teachers of yoga. In my opinion, the illustrations are too idealistic and there should be a note somewhere to say these demonstrate a perfect body and it is always good to modify where needed. Also, the book shows some very advanced asanas that I almost never teach or practice, and lacks some more common ones that I wish were in there.
thank you
useful - a lot of information in a concise manner
Great for people who are curious about what muscle groups are being are being stretched and strengthened during different exercises. The illustrations are excellent!
